By Vince Gasparini | March 22, 2024

University at Albany men’s basketball star Jonathan Beagle has entered the NCAA transfer portal for the second time in his two years with the Great Danes. Beagle entered the portal at the end of last season on March 17, 2023 before deciding to come back for his sophomore year on April 13.

The sophomore forward’s decision was first reported by Verbal Commits on Tuesday.

Beagle stepped away from the program for personal reasons after exiting a Feb. 1 game against Vermont in which he played just eight minutes. He was not seen on the bench in the second half.

After his departure, the final stretch of the Great Danes’ season saw them go 2-7 before losing to Vermont in the first round of the America East Tournament by a score of 75-72. They finished the season 13-19 overall and 5-11 in conference play.

His 9.5 rebounds per game this past season placed him at second in the America East, and his 12.5 points per game made him UAlbany’s third-leading scorer.

In his freshman year, Beagle averaged 12.4 points and 7.5 rebounds en route to winning America East Rookie of the Year and a spot on the America East All-Rookie Team. The 6’10” Hudson Falls native also won a UAlbany-record nine America East Rookie of the Week awards.

Beagle is the first Great Dane to enter the portal this offseason.

“I wish Jonathan and his family the best in his next stop, academically and athletically,” head coach Dwayne Killings told the Times Union.
