Microtrends, Good or Bad?

Fast turning fashion cycles seem to excite some and anger others within society. Microtrends are a short lived phenomenon in the fashion industry. Something that was a must have if you wanted to be a coquette-soft girl is now out, and a grunge brat-summer aesthetic filled with leopard prints is now in. People who chase fashion trends when formulating their wardrobe barely had enough time to donate their pink bows for leather boots.

Someone who may be struggling to find their personal style may appreciate fast fashion trend cycles as it allows someone to try new aesthetics in a short amount of time. Little thought has to be put into curating a new wardrobe in accordance to whatever style you may want to try as most online fashion companies have trained their search engines to cater to your needs if you type in “Y2K,” “Old Money,” “Boho,” and/or “Goth.” One could keep trying and trying the new trends that get popularized through social media until they find something that clicks with them. Just like that, with tons of clothes cycling in and out of your closet, you can find your personal style. No need to go through the awkward stages of picking up piece by piece at a store until something has been created. Now, everything is created for you and the creative process of finding your style is no longer necessary if that is your desire.

What makes it easy for someone to cycle through different styles is not solely dependent on the fact that social media moves information so quickly. It also is due to the fact that fast fashion companies such as SHEIN, Forever 21, and H&M allow consumers to purchase articles of clothing for cheap prices. The quality of the clothing makes them last only up to when the trend of that piece of clothing dies. This is appealing to the people who aren’t sure they want to commit to the style they are adding to their shopping cart. It allows for the consumer to not have a committed relationship with something they do not truly like because the price tag allows them to discard something with ease. Accessibility is not something the fashion industry has ever taken into much consideration. Therefore, enjoyers of these fast fashion cycles and companies are able to dip their toe in a world they would never usually have the chance of getting to know.

On the contrary to microtrends, people who seem to have the largest issue with them believe microtrends take away the art and creativity from fashion. The process of finding one’s personal style was meant to be messy, quirky, and awkward. It was not intended for someone to be able to have a series of outfits that perfectly encapsulate the style one is aiming for. Many times, people find their personal style along the way, or better yet, create one of their own. The idea of having your own aesthetic is possibly at risk as labels on how and why one is dressing a certain way is favored by the media.

Choosing what goes onto your own body is a privilege and one that people do not appreciate enough. A wardrobe was meant to be created piece by piece, not cart by cart.
