This past week saw the following outcomes for University at Albany sports:


Saturday’s win against Maine marked the second week in a row that quarterback Reese Poffenbarger threw for over 300 yards.

Monday, Oct. 23 to Oct. 24:

Golf finished 2nd out of 16 teams in the Lehigh Invitational, with senior Mariel Tee leading the two round tournament with a +3. She was followed by Claudia Blöchliger’s +8, whose +1 on day two boosted her to a tied seventh place finish, and Katelin Richards’ +14, which was good for a tied 12th.


Thursday, Oct. 26:

The University at Albany women’s soccer team lost on their Senior Night on Thursday against conference rival University of Vermont by a score of 3-0. The Catamounts outshot the Great Danes 15-8 through the game, including 9-1 in the second half, and controlled 54% of total possession.


Friday, Oct. 27:

The America East Cross Country Championships ended with the women placing sixth out of nine teams and the men coming in last. Amanda Chambers earned first team all-conference honors, coming in third with a personal best 5K of 17:40.13, the ninth-best performance in program history averaged by mile pace. The team finished with a scoring gap of 2:10.92.


Freshman Logan Doll finished first for the men, placing 49th in 26:42.26. The other four scorers came within 16 places of Doll for a scoring gap of 37.32.


Field hockey earned the regular season America East title with a 2-1 road victory over Vermont. The Catamounts scored in the first quarter and led until a Sophia Schoonmaker goal with under four minutes left in the game, followed up by an Isabelle Del Vecchio score about two minutes later. UAlbany outshot Vermont 8-4 and closes the regular season ranked #19 at 7-1 in the America East and 12-5 overall.


Volleyball fell in four sets at Binghamton, dropping three straight after an opening 25-18 victory. They dropped sets two and three both by scores of 25-22, tying 22 times across both rounds before falling 25-19 in the fourth. Shynelle Woroniuk and Anna Myhal combined for 29 kills, and Sthefany Carvalho led the defense with 17 digs. UAlbany fell to 2-5 in league and 7-14 overall with the loss.


Men’s soccer lost 1-0 in their road finale at Vermont. They were outshot 16-7, with Vermont’s Zach Barrett scoring off a corner kick in the 61st minute. Shafique Wilson recorded six saves in the defeat, and UAlbany sits at 1-4-1 in conference and 5-10-1 overall.


Saturday, Oct. 28:

Football dominated Maine 37-21, moving to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in conference. Reese Poffenbarger dominated through the air with 321 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Faysal Aden rushed for 142 yards on 22 carries for a pair of touchdowns in his first game as lead back since opening night.


Wide receiver MarQeese Dietz broke out for 150 yards on seven catches, while Brevin Easton caught both of Poffenbarger’s touchdowns, finishing with four receptions for 129 yards. Linebacker Ori Jean-Charles led the defense with 10 tackles in his return to Maine, playing there from 2019-21, while defensive lineman Joseph Greaney and safety Isaac Duffy each recorded an interception.


Volleyball dropped their third straight in a four set loss at Bryant. After holding on in the first to win 25-23, they were rolled in the second 25-13, before a 22-all tie in the third became a 25-23 defeat before losing the fourth 25-15. Elisavet Papageorgiou and Sthefany Carvalho led the defense with 17 and 14 kills respectively, and the Great Danes now sit at 2-6 in conference and 7-15 overall.
