Sports Summary (8/26 - 9/1)

This past week saw the following results for University at Albany sports:


Wide Receiver Seven McGee (#7) in Saturday’s Blackout game against LIU. McGee went for a total 119 receiving yards in Saturday’s win.

Thursday, Aug. 29:


Men’s soccer lost in a heartbreaker to Seton Hall 2-1 in South Orange, N.J. Midfielder Ivar Orri Gissurarson scored UAlbany’s lone goal, and defender Christos Efstathiou recorded the assist. Goalkeeper Daniel Shannon recorded four saves and Parker Kump recorded one save. The Great Danes now have a record of 1-2. 


Friday, Aug. 30:


Volleyball kicked off their regular season by beating NDSU 3-0 in the FGCU Hilton Garden Inn Fort Myers Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. Shynelle Woroniuk led the team with 15 kills and Sthefany Carvalho led the team with 15 defensive digs. The Great Danes improved their record to 1-0. 


Volleyball lost to UIC 3-1 in the FGCU Hilton Garden Inn Fort Myers Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. Shynelle Woroniuk led the team with 16 kills and Sthefany Carvalho led the team with 14 defensive digs. The Great Danes fell to a record of 1-1. 


Field hockey lost to #14 Ohio State 6-1 in Columbus, Ohio. The team finished the game with 11 shots on goal. Mara Kusks led the team with three shots on goal and scored the lone goal of the game. Goalkeeper Lara Behn recorded five saves. The Great Danes now have a record of 0-1. 


Saturday, Aug. 31:


#16 ranked football beat LIU 27-21 in their season opener. Quarterback Myles Burkett threw 12/26  and 165 yards. He also threw one touchdown pass. Griffin Woodell led the team with 85 rushing yards and Seven McGee caught five passes for 119 yards and recorded one touchdown. Jack Iuliano and Brock Boyer both recorded one tackle on defense. The Great Danes’ record now stands at 1-0. 


Volleyball lost to FGCU on the final day of the FGCU Hilton Garden Inn Fort Myers Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Kendall Harris led the team with 8 kills and Sthefany Carvalho led the team with 13 defensive digs. The Great Danes’ record now stands at 1-2. 


Men’s cross country and women’s cross country competed at the Marist Invitational in Poughkeepsie, NY. For the men, they competed in a 6k race whereas the women competed in a 5k race. 


Senior Jared Rogalski, sophomore Isaac Graber, Smith, senior Katie Iocca and junior Hannah Stiener all bettered their times posted from the 2023 season. For the women, Graduate student Tess Fitzmaurice and junior Skyler Smith finished with Top 10 placements in the first race of the season. 


The men’s team finished third with 86 points and the women’s team also finished third with 72 points. 


Sunday, Sept. 1:


Field hockey beat Ohio 4-0 in Columbus, Ohio. The team finished the game with 13 shots on goal. Allison Smisdom led the team with three shots on goal and scored three goals. Eva Jenniskens scored one goal. Mara Kuskes led the team with two assists. The Great Danes’ record now stands at 1-1. 


Women’s soccer lost to Quinnipiac 3-0 in Hamden, CT. The team was able to take 10 shots on goal and received two corner kicks. Goalkeeper Emily Dorfman recorded eight saves.  The Great Danes’ record now stands at 1-3. 


Men’s soccer lost to St. John’s 3-0 in Queens, N.Y. The team took six shots on goal and received only one corner kick. Goalkeeper Parker Kump recorded three saves. The Great Danes’ record now stands at 1-3.
