Sports Summary (9/2-9/8)

This past week saw the following results for University at Albany sports:


The women’s volleyball team celebrating their win against Iona Friday night. The Great Danes hosted the UAlbany Invitational in the newly renovated PE Gym this weekend.

Thursday, Sept. 5:


Men’s soccer lost in a close game to Siena 1-0. The team recorded a total of five shots on goal and received six corner kicks. Goalkeeper Parker Kump recorded five saves. The Great Danes now have a record of 1-4. 


Women’s soccer lost to St. John’s 2-0 in Queens, N.Y. The team took only two shots and did not receive any corner kicks. Goalkeeper Emily Dorfman recorded eight saves. The Great Danes’ record now stands at 1-4. 


Friday, Sept. 6:


Volleyball hosted the UAlbany Invitational in the newly renovated PE Gymnasium this weekend. The Great Danes lost to Central Michigan 3-1. The team recorded a total of 38 kills and five blocks. Kendall Harris led the team with 13 kills and Shynelle Woroniuk also recorded 12 kills and 11 defensive digs. Sthefany Carvalho led the team with a match-high 25 defensive digs. Anna Myhal also recorded 11 defensive digs. The Great Danes fell to a record of 1-3. 


Volleyball beat Iona 3-0. The team recorded a total of 42 kills and four blocks. Shynelle Woroniuk led the team with 10 kills. Anna Myhal and Kendall Harris also recorded nine kills and Sthefany Carvalho led the team with 24 defensive digs. The Great Danes improved their record to 2-3. 


Field hockey beat Merrimack 8-0 in their first home game of the season. The team finished the game with 20 shots on goal. Alison Smisdom led the team with three shots at goal and recorded two goals. Six other women each scored one goal each, contributing to the commanding win. The Great Danes now have a record of 2-1. 


Saturday, Sept. 7:


Volleyball beat FDU in a 3-2 thriller on the final day of the UAlbany Invitational. The team recorded a total of 54 kills, 10 aces and seven blocks. Shynelle Woroniuk led the team with 19 kills and Maria Olga Siapani led the team with 12 defensive digs. Three other team members also recorded over 10 defensive digs. Volleyball’s record now stands at 3-3. 


#16 ranked Football lost to West Virginia University 49-14 in Morgantown, W. Va. Quarterback Myles Burkett threw 18/39 for 306 yards. He also threw one touchdown pass. Seven McGee led the team with four catches for 90 yards, and four other receivers produced over 30 receiving yards. Dontae Lunan led the defense with 11 tackles. Ron Holmes and Joe-Kamara Thomas both recorded 10 tackles. The Great Danes’ record now stands at 1-1. 


Sunday, Sept. 8:


Women’s golf kicked off their season this weekend at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa. They finished the tournament 5th out of 13 teams, and finished 95 over par. Sophomore Callie Taylor led the way for the Great Danes, placing third overall as an individual and ending the tournament 10 over par. Their next tournament is scheduled for September 23-24 at the Red Bandanna (BC) Invitational in Canton, Mass. 


#20 ranked field hockey beat Cornell 3-2 in shootouts. The team finished the game with 10 shots on goal. Allison Smisdom led the team with three shots at goal and scored one goal. Makenna Lowe also had one shot at goal and scored one goal. Goalkeeper Lara Behn recorded six saves. The Great Danes’ record now stands at 3-1.
