This past week saw the following results for University at Albany sports:
Jed Elmbarki competing at the RPI Harvest Classic on Friday. Elmbarki finished fourth in the Men’s 8k race.

Tuesday, Sept. 24:
Men’s soccer lost to Rhode Island 2-1 in Kingston, Rhode Island. The team recorded a total of 12 shots, with four shots on goal. Ander Castillo scored the lone goal for the Great Danes, while Brennan McDermott and Ethan Cook recorded an assist. Pedro Lucas led the team with four shots, with two shots at goal. Goalkeeper Parker Kump recorded four saves. The Great Danes fell to a record of 2-6-1.
Women’s golf competed in the Red Bandana Invitational in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. They finished the tournament 8th out of 15 teams, and finished 91 over par. Freshman Mia Cepeda led the way for the Great Danes, placing 27th overall as an individual and ending the tournament 20 over par.
Friday, Sept. 27:
Volleyball lost to Binghamton in their first conference match of the season. The team recorded a total of 25 kills, one ace and four and a half blocks. Shynelle Woroniuk led the team with 10 kills. Brooke Malek led the team with 10 defensive digs. The Great Danes fell to a record of 4-9 and fell to 0-1 in conference play.
#17 ranked field hockey beat UMass Lowell 2-1. The team finished the game with 17 shots, with nine shots on goal. Blanca Orsola and Floor de Ruiter both scored one goal. de Ruiter also recorded one assist. Goalkeeper Lara Behn recorded two saves. The Great Danes’ record improved to 7-1 overall, and improved to 2-0 in conference play.
Men’s cross country and women’s cross country competed at the RPI Harvest Fest in Saratoga Springs, New York. For the men, they competed in a 8k race whereas the women competed in a 5k race.
Graduate student Tess Fitzmaurice led the women’s cross country team with a first place finish and junior Skyler Smith finished third. Kaitlyn Iocca, Alondra Cruz-Delgado and Scarlett Rose had top-20 finishes, placing sixth, seventh and 17th respectively. For the men, Jed Elmbarki led the team with a fourth place finish. Tom Ragone and Chris Bertola both had top 20 finishes, placing eight and 14th respectively.
The men’s team finished second with 52 points and the women’s team finished first with 25 points. Both results came out of a pool of five teams.
Saturday, Sept. 28:
#21 ranked football lost to Maine 34-20 in their first conference game of the season and during their Hometown Heroes game. Quarterback Myles Burkett threw 19/32 for 202 yards. He also threw two touchdown passes. Seven McGee led the team with four catches for 72 yards and two touchdowns. MarQeese Dietz also recorded four catches for a total of 43 yards. Dontae Lunan led the defense with two sacks and finished with 11 tackles and three tackles for loss. Ron Holmes led the team with 12 tackles and also finished the game with three tackles for loss. The Great Danes’ record now stands at 1-3 and they now stand at 0-1 in CAA conference play.
Men’s soccer lost to UMass Lowell 2-0 in Lowell, Massachusetts, in their first conference game of the season. The team recorded a total of 10 shots, with seven shots on goal. Ander Castillo led the team with five shots, with three shots at goal. Timo Jansen recorded two shots and three other players recorded one shot each. Goalkeeper Parker Kump recorded two saves. The Great Danes’ record now stands at 2-7-1, and they have a record of 0-1-0 in conference play.
Sunday, Sept. 29:
Women’s golf participated in the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, New Jersey. They finished the tournament 10th out of 12 teams, and finished 67 over par. Sophomore Callie Taylor led the way for the Great Danes, finishing 15th overall as an individual and ending the tournament 13 over par. Their next tournament is scheduled for October 5-6, their only home tournament this fall at the UAlbany Great Danes Invitational in Delmar, New York.
Women’s soccer fell to Bryant 2-0 in their first home conference game of the season. The team took 12 shots, with five shots at goal. Selma Elverum led the team with four shots with two shots on goal. Two other players recorded two shots each. Goalkeeper Emily Dorfman recorded seven saves. The Great Danes’ record now stands at 1-8-1, and they have a record of 0-1-1 in conference play.
#17 ranked field hockey beat Liberty 4-2. The team finished the game with 11 shots, with eight shots on goal. Alison Smisdom led the team with three goals, and Lotje Ligthart scored one goal. Ligthart also recorded one assist. Goalkeeper Lara Behn recorded one save. The Great Danes’ record now stands at 8-1 overall, and 2-0 in conference play.
Volleyball lost to New Hampshire in a tight 3-0 match. The team recorded a total of 39 kills, two aces and four blocks. Shynelle Woroniuk led the team with 13 kills. Elisavet Papageorgiou recorded 12 kills. Maria Olga Siapani led the team with 13 defensive digs and Brooke Malek recorded 12 digs. Volleyball’s record now stands at 4-10 and they now have a record of 0-2 in conference play.
