Sports Summary (9/30-10/6)

This past week saw the following results for University at Albany sports:


The women’s golf team, coaching staff and UAlbany mascot Damien at the Normanside Country Club. The team hosted the Inaugural UAlbany Great Danes Invitational in Delmar this weekend.

Tuesday, Oct. 1:


Men’s soccer lost to Syracuse 3-1. The team recorded a total of 11 shots, with four shots on goal. Timo Jansen scored the lone goal for the Great Danes. Nassim Nouajaa led the team with three shots and Jansen recorded two with two shots at goal. Six other players recorded one shot each. Goalkeeper Daniel Shannon recorded four saves. The Great Danes fell to a record of 2-8-1.


Wednesday, Oct. 2:


Volleyball beat Le Moyne 3-1. The team recorded a total of 45 kills, 10 aces and nine blocks. Shynelle Woroniuk led the team with 15 kills and recorded 10 defensive digs. Kendall Harris recorded 10 kills. Maria Olga Siapani led the team with 13 defensive digs. Kiki Provatas recorded 12 defensive digs and Sthefany Carvalho also recorded 10 digs. The Great Danes improved to a record of 5-10. 


Thursday, Oct. 3:


Women’s soccer fell to New Hampshire 1-0 in Durham, New Hampshire. The team only took one shot, taken by Claire Owens. Goalkeeper Emily Dorfman recorded 14 saves, matching her career best. The Great Danes’ record fell to 1-9-1, and fell to 0-2-1 in conference play. 


Friday, Oct. 4:


#13 ranked field hockey beat Hofstra 3-0 in Hempstead, New York. The team finished the game with 12 shots, with six shots on goal. Charlotte Triggs, Eva Jenniskens and Alison Smisdom recorded one goal each. Smisdom also recorded an assist. Sophia Schoonmaker and Mara Kuskes each recorded one assist. The Great Danes’ record improved to 9-1 overall. 


Saturday, Oct. 5:


Football beat Cornell 31-10 in Ithaca, New York, snapping a three game losing streak. Quarterback Myles Burkett threw 21/30 for 225 yards. He also threw one touchdown pass. Seven McGee led the team with eight catches for 70 yards. Levi Wentz recorded five catches for a total of 52 yards. Jacari Carter caught the lone touchdown pass, while Faysal Aden and Jojo Uga both rushed for one touchdown each. Aden rushed for a total of 133 yards and Uga rushed for a total of 91 yards. John Opalko made three field goals. Troy Berschwinger led the defense with one sack and finished with eight tackles. Jack Iuliano also recorded one sack. The Great Danes’ record now stands at 2-3 and stand at 0-1 in conference play.

 

Men’s soccer lost to Vermont 4-1 in their first home conference game of the season. The team recorded a total of eight shots, with six shots on goal. Ander Castillo led the team with five shots, with four shots at goal and the lone goal for the Great Danes. Timo Jansen recorded the lone assist of the game. Three other players recorded one shot each. Goalkeeper Parker Kump recorded three saves. The Great Danes record now stands at 2-9-1, and have a record of 0-2-0 in conference play. 


Sunday, Oct. 6:


Women’s golf hosted the program’s first tournament, the UAlbany Great Danes Invitational in Delmar, New York this weekend. They finished the tournament 7th out of 12 teams, and finished 54 over par. Junior Lucia Esteban led the way for the Great Danes, finishing eighth overall as an individual and ending the tournament 11 over par. Their final tournament of the fall season is scheduled for October 19-20 at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.


Women’s soccer beat UMass Lowell 3-2 snapping a prolonged losing streak. The team was able to take 14 shots, with eight shots at goal. Madison Hnis, Selma Elverum and Sophia DeMura each scored one goal. Four players each recorded one assist each. Elverum led the team with five shots with three shots at goal. Goalkeeper Emily Dorfman recorded eight saves. The Great Danes’ record now stands at 2-9-1, and have a record of 0-2-1 in conference play. 


#13 ranked field hockey lost to #8 UConn 2-0. The team finished the game with seven shots, with two shots on goal. Alison Smisdom led the team with four shots, with one shot at goal. Charlotte Triggs, Floor de Ruiter and Delphine Le June recorded one shot each. Goalkeeper Lara Behn recorded four saves. The Great Danes’ record now stands at 9-2 overall, and 2-0 in conference play. 


Volleyball lost to UMBC in a tight 3-2 match in Baltimore, Maryland. The team recorded a total of 57 kills, four aces and 14 blocks. Shynelle Woroniuk led the team with 19 kills. Kendall Harris recorded 11 kills and Elisavet Papageorgiou recorded 10 kills. Brooke Malek led the team with 16 defensive digs. Maria Olga Siapani recorded 14 defensive digs and Kasia Barletta recorded 12 digs. Volleyball’s record now stands at 5-11 and now have a record of 0-3 in conference play.
