On May 5, we all get to delight in the MET Gala, an event held to raise funding for the MET to preserve historical pieces in fashion. It’s also a big moment in pop culture to see how all the celebrities that are invited choose to engage with the dress code, which is the idea the fashion looks should be inspired by for the night. This year the dress code is “Tailored for You” which was centered around the theme of the gala, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
In terms of the theme and what people should be expected to wear, you are definitely going to see different transitions of suits that would probably be the most basic interpretation of the dress code. Men that are attending will most likely be wearing suits. The designers of those suits will be paying a lot of attention to the tailoring work. Some designers can choose to custom make designs and use stitches that were primarily used in Black cultures. This being a good way to honor the theme, but also honor the impact of Black fashion. It’s been a critique of men in past red carpets, especially the MET Gala, that their attire seems very simple. There’s no artistic uniqueness from designer to designer or celebrity to celebrity. Ways to combat this fun embroidery on tuxedos or potentially even messing with the silhouette of a tuxedo may be playing around and having the button up have designs or the pants could be fitted in a fun new way.
Kinds of liberties are usually awarded to the women and I think that a common motive you’ll see with women at the MET Gala is going to be differentiations of a blazer top and a dress. There could be a tuxedo that falls down into a ball gown having a ginormous skirt, or there could simply just be a nice fitted top with a skirt made of the materials that you would see in a suit. I think the easiest way for women to play around with the dress code would be in this manner. Other ways I think women would be able to play around with their attire is fully embracing the Girlboss energy that we had in the mid-2010’s. Remembering how we used to have put such a pedestal on strong, independent women, owning their own companies and being girl bosses, using that as inspiration to hone into these strong female celebrities on the red carpet. Fun, brooches, statement heels, and maybe high-low effects when it comes to the clothing could also be other ways that celebrities can spruce up their red carpet looks.
Now, obviously the majority of the celebrities and attendees of the Met Gala will adhere to the dress code. But it would be ignorant to believe that every single attendee will do so every single year. There are people that choose to divert and wear something that has nothing to do with the dress code. There was a lot of pushback when the Met Gala dress code highlighted controversial designer Karl Lagerfelt, who is very controversial for many reasons including his open criticism of plus-size bodies in fashion. Those protests came from many celebrity attendees like Lizzo who would wear Chanel or a piece inspired by Karl Lagerfeld emphasizing her plus size body.
That is what we expect to see on the carpet, but about the actual event’s theme: oftentimes, people may confuse the concepts of the MET Gala’s theme and their dress code. The theme is what the whole event centers around. The theme is what to expect the MET Gala to present. The MET Gala theme also lets the public know what pieces of historical fashion will be highlighted during the event. This year the theme was inspired by Black fashion, exploring its evolution throughout the years and also appreciating its impact on contemporary fashion. Will you be tuning in for this year's fashion displays?
