The University at Albany football team has unveiled its schedule for the upcoming 2022 season.
The season opener will be in Waco, Texas, where Albany will take on last year’s Sugar Bowl champion Baylor Bears. Baylor, who finished last season ranked fifth overall in the AP poll, will be the highest-ranked team to ever play against Albany.
The Great Danes will play five home games in Casey Stadium, the first of which will be on September 10 against the University of New Hampshire. Albany has won three straight against UNH. Albany will also host CCSU, Maine, and Monmouth, and will have home-field advantage in their annual rivalry matchup with Stony Brook when the Seawolves come to Casey Stadium on October 29th.
The Great Danes schedule features three out-of-conference matchups, including one against their fellow New York university Fordham on September 17. This will be the first meeting between the two schools. UAlbany will also face the two newest members of the Colonial Conference in back-to-back weeks when they take on Monmouth and then Hampton in the following two.
The Albany schedule is unique in that the Great Danes will not play any consecutive home or away games. Every other game will be a home game this season. Head Coach Greg Gattuso offered his thoughts on the upcoming slate of games.
“We’re happy with the schedule. I think we have a challenging opener, but we have a chance to jump into conference play the next week at home which is important after a tough game like Baylor,” said Gattuso. “Home and away all the way through, I think it’s one of the few times in my life I’ve had a schedule like that, so it will be interesting. But all in all, I think it’s a good schedule, we are excited about it.”
