With the gaming market projected to reach $293.2 billion by 2027, UAlbany has worked to give students the opportunity to explore their passion for the industry and take the necessary steps towards creating a successful career in the world of gaming.

Starting in Fall 2025, the University at Albany is introducing a new Bachelor of Science in Game Design and Development program as well as a Master of Science in Game Design and Applied Development. The College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity (CEHC) received approval to establish the new programs in the Department of Information Sciences for students to enroll in as soon as the 2025-2026 academic year.

“Gaming is about more than just entertainment. It's a driving force in technology, storytelling, and innovation,” Dean Robert Griffin of the CEHC said in a news release. “Our unique new programs are designed to prepare students for the wide variety of careers in the digital gaming industry at a prime location in the Capital Region that is full of internships and other experiential learning opportunities, as well as potential job and career offerings.”

Undergraduate concentrations for this new major include Innovation Narrative in Game Design, Emerging Technology in Games and more, according to the news release.

Students will be able to work hands-on doing research in technology related to gaming. They will learn how to analyze the data they collect, and then translate their findings into a plethora of formats. The master’s program includes concentrations such as Cybersecurity in Games, Leadership and Management in Game Production, and User Experience.

To further their commitment to helping students explore this growing field, UAlbany recently additionally opened a new Esports arena where serious gamers and casual players can come together and grow their gaming expertise.
