Women’s Soccer Routed by Cornell in Shutout Loss

By Vince Gasparini | October 23, 2023

The University at Albany women’s soccer team collected their eighth loss of the season in a 4-0 loss at Cornell after a second half beatdown. The Big Red outshot UAlbany 30-8 through the game, which was the ladies’ final non-conference match of the 2023 regular season.

Cornell’s Alanna Colbert scored the first goal of the game for the Big Red.

Cornell broke junior goalkeeper Gabriella Terranova’s line three times in 11 minutes late in the second half. Once in the 70th minute off the foot of Reagan Pauwels, and then two more in the 79th and 81st minute, both by senior forward Laken Gallman.

Terranova started in goal for the Great Danes for the third game straight. Though she racked up a career-high 12 saves, it was not enough to avoid the barrage of Big Red shots. In the 15th minute, Cornell’s Alanna Colbert scored off of an assist by Sophia Weeter, her first goal of her collegiate career.

UAlbany sophomore forward Selma Elverum took two shots throughout the game. In the seventh minute, Elverum took a shot directed to the bottom right of Cornell’s goal, but Cornell goalkeeper Natalie Medguno’s positioning on the shot allowed her to make an early save.

The loss brings the Great Danes to an overall record of 4-8-2. They stand at 1-3-2 in America East play. Their next match is an away game at UMass Lowell on Oct. 22.
