The University at Albany women’s soccer team lost on their Senior Night on Thursday against conference rival University of Vermont by a score of 3-0. The Catamounts outshot the Great Danes 15-8 through the game, including 9-1 in the second half, and controlled 54% of total possession.

Seniors Iola Cotter, Megan Hart, Erin Kennelley, Ashley Ladner, Olivia Piraino, Brooke Pickett, Devon Schmitt, and Charlotte Takacsy were honored before the game. Family members and loved ones were in attendance to show support.

Vermont’s first goal came in the 16th minute after a free kick, when midfielder Bailey Ayer scored on a ball shot low and to the left of UAlbany goalkeeper Gabriella Terranova. Another goal came in the 47th minute, when forward Kate Bossert received a crossover pass from the right side of the field by Frances O’Donnell, and snuck it past Terranova’s left for the goal. Sydney Remington capped the scoring for the Catamounts in the 75th minute, shooting the ball past a diving Terranova.

UAlbany saw several scoring chances throughout the game. In the 15th minute, Schmitt received a ball in the air after a corner kick and attempted to head it into the goal, however it sailed over the crossbar. A shot by Piraino in the 35th minute had the same fate. In the 88th minute, Ladner had a chance to score on a penalty kick after Vermont’s Amelia Adiutori committed a foul in the Catamounts’ box. Ladner shot it directly at Vermont goalkeeper Erin Murphy, who made the save.

The Great Danes’ frustration was apparent late in the second half. In the 77th minute, UAlbany’s Tiffany Bernot was served a red card after exchanging a push and a shove with Remington after her goal two minutes earlier. Pickett received a yellow card two minutes later after foul play in the Vermont box.

The Great Danes finish the season at 4-10-2 overall, and 1-5-2 in conference play. They failed to qualify for the 2023 America East Tournament, which begins on Oct. 29.
